Social Media and Education

I believe that our youth has made up their mind about social media and clearly, it is here to stay. I think that as educators we must be constantly evolving, although that might mean to do things in a way that we thought it was not possible. Our job is to find a way to engage them and make the content accessible to everybody so why not take advantage of the technology they use daily and try to use it in our benefit? I feel that we must explore the potential of the available technology and media-sharing services that although not designed specifically for educational purposes, it can be used to empower students and create exciting new learning opportunities.

  1. Great ideas-- give us some specifics of how this might be done.

  2. I agree with your statement that we need to make the content accessible and engage students the best we can with given curriculum. In this case, we are talking about adding technology to the classroom and using it effectively. However, this reminds me of cultural pedagogy, which is also a valuable characteristic of a learning environment. In the same way, we need to reach students on individual levels that are relevant to them. Although cultural pedagogy has been present longer and stressed in classrooms, currently, technology may start to be just as important to get in touch with our youth.

    1. Absolutely! things have changed and technology evolves faster than we can keep up with it. I believe there are many students that you as an educator might have an easier time to reach at an individual level if technology is involved. I guess you can use social media to engage them, teach them and getting to know them as well.

  3. As adults we should be socially responsible in making social media a learning tool. I know its hard for kids to understand that they should have proper manners in speaking through text. But I also believe children don't really know the ins and outs to our society yet. We need to be apart of their learning not so so much as a adult. Technology is great but it can hurt our youth in more ways then one.

    1. I agree Jenny. That is why is very important to develop solid relationships with your students. I believe that technology can hurt our children but if we use it to our advantage it can be very beneficial.

  4. The ideas you mention in your post I agree with. We should focus on giving students in this country better access to current technology, but, we should also explore the new content being added to Facebook and Blogger in the process. As teachers it is important that all of us stay up-to-date on what is available to us on social media websites. Then, we can decide on how or if the new content can be adapted to the lessons we teach.
